Sedation Dentistry
If you are apprehensive, scared or simply hate going to the dentist,
then sedation dentistry is an option you might consider. Sedation dentistry
helps you escape the fear, trauma and unpleasant dental experiences you
may have previously had. It helps put you in a comfort zone where you
are unaware of the noises, smells, and tastes, yet conscious enough to
respond to the dentist and staff.
What does the procedure involve?
A special pill is prescribed by the dentist. You will take this pill
approximately one hour before the procedure. We ask that a friend
or family member accompanies you to the appointment. You are then
escorted to the treatment room, placed on a monitor and the dental
treatment is provided appropriately. Sometimes, Nitrous Oxide (laughing
gas) is used in supplementation to "pill" sedation to help
achieve the appropriate comfort level. Upon completion of the appointment,
the friend or family member must take you home.
What are the advantages?
Other than your mental and physical comfort, multiple dental procedures
can be performed in one appointment. This saves you time, discomfort
and trips to the dentist.

Oral Sedation (Pill)
First, we review your medical history. If cleared by your MD, you
are given a pill to take one hour prior to your dental appointment.
You will need a companion to drive you to and from the dental office.
The pill works quickly to create a relaxed state so you will be drowsy
when you arrive. During treatment, your vital signs will be monitored
while you are in a sleep-like state. You will be able to respond to
any given commands or questions, but will not likely recall events
while the drug is in effect. This is ideal for the dental phobic patient.
Nitrous Oxide
What is Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) sedation?
Nitrous Oxide is a gas that is administered at a certain percent in
conjunction with Oxygen gas. The percent administered depends on the
tolerance of the individual.
This is a milder type of sedation which offers an escape from any discomforts
and is recommended for the mildly nervous patient, who does not desire
deeper sedation.
